MASHED ISSUE 4
There has never been a better time to throw yourself into homebrewing! Don’t know about you but we’ve been brewing and drinking copious amounts during lockdown. And with everything that’s going on it’s the perfect occasion to support and celebrate British growers. In this issue we’re spotlighting two brilliant companies supplying us with top notch British malts and hops. And, together, we’re launching a great collab brew kit.
When the supermarket shelves were emptied a few weeks ago, our thoughts turned to food waste and food security. Bread was one of our staples that, overnight, became gold dust. So we’re also introducing you to a great brewery that makes cracking beer from leftover bread, and we’re leaving you with some tips on brewing with other types of food waste (pg 10). Plus, if you fancy malting your own barley (home grown or not) we’ve got the DIY lowdown for you.Â
Keep well, brew hard!
Welcome to the Hop-a-Dome
We have been dabbling with growing our hops hydroponically since we started in 2016. But this year was the year to go large. The year when all the pieces finally fell into place. After handpicking a selection of Chinook hops we installed them into our amazing Hydroponic lab: the “Hop-a-domeâ€, a 5m (height) x 10m (diameter) geodesic dome.

Malting your own Barley
Growing your own barley is like growing your own hops at home - not necessarily the most cost effective way of doing things, but highly rewarding. Garden to pint would be a proud achievement of any homebrewer!

Brook House Hops – Craft Hops for Craft Brewers
It would be impossible to dedicate an issue of MASHED! Magazine to British grown homebrew ingredients without including our friends at Brook House Hops.

Pauls Malts: Master Maltsers since Early Times since Early Times
From sending our delivery boats to rescue British troops from Dunkirk in 1940 to supplying homebrewers with malt in 2020, Pauls Malts have a rich and solid history as a British producer.

Brewing with food waste
According to research carried out by WRAP (wrap.org.uk) we throw away 6.6 million tonnes of household food waste each year in the UK alone. Cutting food waste can save a family £500 a year, and reduce greenhouse gases and wasted food miles and plastic.

Collaboration Brew Kit
We don’t let a global pandemic bother us here at Dark Farm! Instead, we work on building new relationships with awesome people. Over the last few months, we’ve been secretly liaising (digitally, obvs) with Sebastian Nielsen from Brookhouse Hops and Lawrence Plant from Pauls Malts - we’re very excited about what we’ve produced.
