Brewed to be part of the Aber Beer Festival. This is a delightfully fruity sour which smacks you around the face. Famehouse vides, strawberries and lime a great combination for all seasons

You know that feeling when you’re craving for more out of life? Well, sometimes you just have to challenge yourself to step things up a notch. Homebrewing is the perfect opportunity to do so. New techniques, new styles, perfecting the basic recipe, trying new equipment. This is what we’ve done this year by opening our Community Brewery in Aberystwyth - the in-real-life version of this magazine. On our journey we’re taking with us novice homebrewers and experienced ones alike. In this issue we look at the brews we created together for Aber Beer Fest. An occasion of many firsts, including the first time we have cask-conditioned our brews.
Inspired by this, we meet Dancing Duck Brewery who specialise in real ales. And for weird and wonderful beers and techniques, head to page 6 to read about The Steam Machine Brewing Co. Â
So pour yourself a glass of your latest brew and dive on in. Cheers!

Brewed to be part of the Aber Beer Festival. This coffee-inspired stout uses coffee malts and roasted malts with a sprinkling of almonds to add sweetness, resulting in a smooth stout with all the roasted flavors of that early cup of coffee
Brewed to be part of the Aber Beer Festival. A true session golden ale is ideal any time of the day. Slightly malty but the real star of this beer is the hops full of summer flavours
Brewed to be part of the Aber Beer Festival. Dare you to drink the Dragons Blood - this fantastic ale is red, sharp, and full of flavour. With over 5KG of cheery and a dash or sour you could be mistaken this beer for a fruit wine
Brewed to be part of the Aber Beer Festival. Inspired by the Motörhead beer Road Crew this classic APA rocks. Hopped with melon and orange undertones produced an epic beer which you’ll be begging for an encore
Q: I’m having difficulty in hitting my OGs. Can you help?
For our appearance at the recent Aberystwyth Beer Festival, we created 4 casked beers that would be considered to be real ale. This got me thinking a lot about real ale and what it is. More importantly, should the term “real ale†be redefined a little to reflect modern times, or is it right to support the heritage of the great British pint?
Ever since we met Tristan through Aberystwyth Homebrew Club, we’ve been plotting to get an interview with him. This homebrewer really knows what he is doing! So we were keen for him to share his knowledge and interest in fermenting, brewing and growing with you.
Community is what drives us here at MASHED. So it’s no surprise that we get major crushes on other independent businesses who value community. The Steam Machine Brewing Co. in County Durham is the perfect example. Founded in 2015 by Nick Smith and his wife, Gulen, the brewery delights with epic brews like Steam Lagers, treacle-based Imperial Stouts, Northern Brown Ales dry-hopped with Citra, and beers infused with Earl Grey tea.
We’ve been getting into real ales a lot more here at MASHED. And spurred on by the challenge of participating in Aber Beer Fest this summer with our first ever cask ales, we’ve been looking at what makes a great real ale. When we’ve brought this up in conversation with our beer buddies, Dancing Duck Brewery has been recommended to us a number of times.
Brewed to be part of the Aber Beer Festival. For those with a sweet tooth comes the Brownie Maltiverse. This lush brown ale with rich caramel malts top off with chocolate brownies produces a lovely full bodies brew.
Inspiration to help you fill your wine racks and homebars this season. These also make great presents!
What a weekend we had at Aber Beer Festival at the end of August. MASHED Community Brewery managed to brew over 180L of beer, and sold out! With the help of our amazing guest amateur brewers, many of whom had zero brewing experience, we created 6 epic beers. Four of these were casked (our first time) and all were created using our Brew Tank and UniTank.
Do you have a beer festival bucket list? They are a great way to discover new beers and meet up with your beer buddies. They are also an awesome excuse to explore new places, and can be an excellent focal point to explore UK and overseas destinations. Obviously one of the beer festival heavyweights is Oktoberfest, which we covered in issue 9 (read it online at www.mashed.beer), but there are many other amazing contenders. We asked our community for their best beer fest experiences. Here are some of their recommendations.
