Pauls Malts: Master Maltsers since Early Times since Early Times

MASHED ISSUE 4

From sending our delivery boats to rescue British troops from Dunkirk in 1940 to supplying homebrewers with malt in 2020, Pauls Malts have a rich and solid history as a British producer.

We might have been established in the 18th century but we flow with the times to stay ahead of the game. Passionate about malting, we create specially designed craft malt, supplying breweries of all sizes on our own supply chain, just like we did all those years ago.

Not boring

Who’s Paul? Not a person, a family. The Pauls family. And one of the oldest malting family businesses in the UK. Think an old dog can’t learn new tricks? Wrong! Yes, we’re old. Yes, we’ve been around since the 18th century.

So what? That doesn’t mean we can’t have a kickass look and produce some of the best malted barley on the planet. Stuffy and boring? We’re far from it.

Our aim is to be the go-to supplier of malted barley for craft and home brewers. Whatever it takes. That’s what we’ll strive to do. Fact. We take inspiration from our maritime past and have used it to make your malted barley look as good as it can get. Who knew Maris Otter could look this fly?

Proud of our past

Our history dates back to 1733 in Bury St Edmunds. From here, the Pauls family grew the business to be one of the biggest malting groups in the UK.

Historically, the Pauls family supplied malt into London via barge along the East coast, starting the journey at the Ipswich docks. See where we get the inspiration for our funky maritime brand?

At one time, the Pauls family had a fleet of 45 barges to supply breweries all across South England. We were also involved in Operation Dynamo in 1940, sending five boats to rescue British troops from the beaches of Dunkirk. During World War One, our boats delivered supplies to British and allied forces on the continent. Our sailing barges were able to access shallow waters other ships couldn’t reach and were less likely to be targeted by enemy U-boats. Yeah!

But the only boats we use these days are large sea vessels to export our malts all over the world. Countries include Japan, Russia, Italy, Argentina, South Africa, and the USA.

Excited for the future

Today, Pauls Malt operates 4 malting sites in the UK. Two in England: Bury St Edmunds and Malton in Yorkshire. The other two sites are in Scotland: Buckie and Glenesk. Within these sites we have the ability to produce brewing and distilling malts from locally grown barley. Our site in Malton has its own roaster so we can produce high quality crystal, caramel and chocolate malts, as well as many other speciality products.

With a team passionate about barley, beer and whiskey, we want to help brewers craft delicious new tipples for everyone to enjoy. Unconvinced? The proof is in the pudding.

Grain + Grape Does it Mix?

Well, IGA is most definitely a beer. But it’s like a beer and wine got very friendly and had a baby. Made with up to 40% grapes or grape must, IGAs are based on pils malt, or pale malt.
