MASHED ISSUE 14
As life around us continuous to provoke anxiety and woes, Gareth and I have been making a point of turning off the news and whiling away our spare time by creating things. I’ve been stocking up the pantry and Gareth is crafting some rather excellent brews. The Bounty Bar Stout is particularly comforting on these cold evenings. But it’s homebrewing, so inevitably it does bring anxiety and woes of its own! One question we’ve been asked a fair bit is what to do if your wort hasn’t started to ferment.
If you’re feeling up for a challenge for 2023, be sure to enter the UK National Homebrewing Competition. Both Steve Horsfall and Daren Fearon from Reading Amateur Brewers (RAB) have some great pointers and insight for this. RAB are a really active and inspiring group. Talking of inspiring, if you want to get your imagination going you’ll enjoy Stephen J Sparshott’s piece on leaving London to set up a small brewery on the Isle of Arran (pg 6).
Happy brewing and have a jolly Christmas!

BREWING Notes
It’s been a fun three months. I’ve finally found some time to brew up a few batches, giving me inspiration on how to set up my brew dungeon. Making big and important choices, especially when it comes to planning one’s brew space, takes a lot of consideration. As with life, you have to do a few test runs before you settle down.

SMALL ISLAND BREWING
Seagate Brewery was established on a home brewing scale in August 2017. I started it after taking advice from some Belgian friends who said I should brew my own beers. When the Covid pandemic cut off most of my engineering work we decided to go commercial with the brewery. In April 2020, I applied for and received my brewing and alcohol wholesalers’ licences.

a quick look Irish Red Ales
Back in the 90s when I was a student in living in London, an Irish friend of mine got me into drinking Caffrey’s and Kilkenny’s. I know, I know, people diss them now, but they were a pretty decent step away from the watery lagers and Snake Bites & Black we were used to.

Reading Amateur Brewers
A few months ago, Gareth (of Dark Farm Hops & Homebrewing) was invited to give a talk at Reading Amateur Brewers (RAB), so in October he packed up a Brew Tank and a few other Dark Farm and MASHED! goodies and set off to meet this active bunch of homebrewers over at Phantom Brewing Co. He came back really inspired and impressed by the level of activity and organisation within this homebrew club. So I asked Daren Fearon, Chair for RAB, for a chat to discover more.

homebrew milestones
One of the things we love is when we see fellow homebrewers get as excited at their progress and results as we do.
