Turning wasted bread into beer...into MOONSHINE...into hot meals for vulnerable families.
Toast are experts at turning bread into beer. Bread that would otherwise have ended up in the bin (see issue 004). Their whole model is set around challenging the way we, as a society, waste food. So you can imagine how devastated they were when faced with the prospect of pouring a large cancelled order down the drain. The ExCel London convention centre is one of their biggest customers, but following the Government’s decision to turn the centre into London’s NHS Nightingale Hospital ExCel had to pull the plug on their beer order.
As you know, pubs and breweries all around the country have had a pretty crap time of it this year. So it’s uplifting to hear that Toast succeeded in saving this haul of beer from the great beery heaven in the drains. They teamed up with Greensand Ridge Distillery to turn the surplus beer into Inbread Moonshine, an Eau-de-vie de Bière with a 44% alcohol content. Toast describe it as ‘a clear spirit, most akin to an unaged whisky. There are delicate aromas of hops and freshly baked bread, hints of maltiness which develop further on the palate with flavours of warm shortbread, coffee and chocolate, and a sweet hoppy finish with a big juicy, creamy mouthfeel.’
But the feelgoods don’t end at saving precious beer from the flush. Every bottle of Inbread Moonshine will fund 10 hot meals for vulnerable families. ‘We’re building on our successful Meal Deal [with charity partner Feedback], that enabled us to fund over 46,000 meals for people in need during lock-down.’ says Toast’s CEO Rob Wilson. ‘Every purchase of Moonshine will fund freshly made hot food for someone that might otherwise have skipped a meal.’ Cheers to that!
Inbread Moonshine costs £39.50 (500ml) and is available to purchase from toastale.com and
