The oast house provided malted barley for Roberts Brewery, which operated in Trefechan from around 1844 until the 1960s. And while there was quite a dry spell with regards to locally brewed beers in the town until last year when MASHED Brewhouse and Two Rivers Brewery (Bradgy Dwy Afon) both launched, Aberystwyth has still been home to a significant player in the brewing industry. ABER Instruments have been developing their yeast management products for commercial breweries in Aberystwyth since their launch in 1988. Their products include PerfectPitch - a self-contained mobile skid for dosing live yeast, and their compact adapt yeast monitor. Customers of ABER Instruments include Beavertown (Heineken) and Meantime Brewing Co, who you’ll know, of course.
And for us beer-loving consumers, it’s hard to turn a corner around town without coming across a great pub. One of which is Bottle & Barrel craft beer bar who are once again organising Aber Beer Fest, which runs in August. And of course MASHED Brewhouse.
We hope to bring you more insights into Two Rivers Brewery and ABER Instruments in future issues, but in the meantime, come and say hello this summer. If you enjoy great beer, friendly people, live music, good food, and a stunning coastal backdrop, you’ll love it here.
