Last year we gave away the remaining hops to locals around Aberystwyth, on our Adopt a Hop scheme. This week we got our first batch back, David & Susan Bodsworth, handed in over 200g grams of Nugget, which was an amazing harvest from one plant in its first year and grown in the wet valleys of Wales.
When asked what type of beer he would like his reply was "I was brought up on Dark Yorkshire Ale, but have traveled Europe and tried many of the Trapist Brews".
Both beers are malt-forward but out of the two, a Yorkshire Ale would probably suit the green hops better. From experience, I find adding the fresh hops at the end of the boil around the 5-10 mark. This allows the hops to be sterlised from any bugs or wild yeasts and you maintain the attributes from brewing with green hops.
The recipe chosen is as follows:
Yorkshire Bitter 3.8%
A full-bodied amber beer with subtle chocolate notes, with strong bitter finish
Pale Malt 3.5KG
Crystal Malt (medium) 200g
Torrefied Wheat 350g
Light Chocolate Malt 42g
Fuggle Dry Hop 30g 60 mins into the boil
Nugget Green Hops 220g 10 min into the boil
London or Yorkshire Dried Yeast
Protofloc 10 min into the boil
