If you’re looking to sample some exceptional Czech lagers then head to North London where Bohem Brewery serve traditional beers - with a proper pour. Founded in 2017 by Czech ex-pats Petr Skocek and Zdenek Kudr, Bohem Brewery is powered by the ethos ‘to treat lager with the respect it deserves’. Like many, Petr’s brewing started on a much smaller scale at home when, after moving from his homeland to London, he found British pub beer too expensive.
There are now four pros on the Bohem Brewery team including Chief Tapster Marek Průša and Brewmaster MatÄ›j, who has previously worked at BÅ™evnov Monastery Brewery, one of the oldest microbreweries in the Czech Republic.Â
As well as their best-selling, classic Czech Pilsner, Amos, (4.9% ABV, IBU 20) and their extremely quaffable 4.0% session Pils, Martina, releases from Bohem Brewery include their Druid Black Lager (5.7%, IBU 24), a Czech take on the classic German Schwarzbier style and Otakar Brut Lager (6.4% ABV, IBU 25), a collab with St Austell Brewery.
‘We brew on specialist imported Czech decoction brewing kit, which is something most homebrewers won’t have access to, but the essential success of a great lager is the lagering’, says Matej Krizek, brewer at Bohem Brewery. ‘All our beers are matured at low temperature for a minimum of five weeks, which is what gives them the depth of flavour that characterises them all.’ Â
Na ZdravÃ! (Cheers!)
